Yahoo! Inc. (NYSE: YHOO) is an American company of internet services with the mission to be “the most comprehensive Internet service essential for consumers and businesses.” Operates an Internet portal, a web directory, and other services, including the popular Yahoo! Mail. It was founded by David Filo and Jerry Yang, graduates of Stanford University in January 1994 and incorporated on March 2, 1995. The company is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.
According to Alexa Internet, an enterprise Web trends, Yahoo is the second most visited page on the Internet in the United States after Google, and also the 3rd most visited page in the world in 2009. The global network of Yahoo pages received 3 billion page views per day in October 2004.
In “Ad Planner Top 1000 Sites,” which records the most accessed sites in the world, through the search engine Google, released in June 2010, Yahoo appears to 2nd place with 490 million visitors and a global reach 32% recorded in April, behind only social networking site Facebook.
While Yahoo’s popularity grew, new services were emerging, making Yahoo a must for all new Internet trends. These include: Yahoo Messenger, an instant messenger, Yahoo Groups, very popular service to create mailing lists by subject of interest, chat and online games, various news portals and information, online shopping and auctions. Many of these are based on independent services, which Yahoo bought eGroups as the popular GeoCities for hosting web sites, and Rocketmail. Many of these actions have angered some users who already use these services before being bought by Yahoo, as the company always used to change the terms of service. A striking case in this direction was the incorporation of the webring service in 2000.
On February 1, 2008, Microsoft wanted to buy Yahoo! for 44.6 billion U.S. dollars, but Yahoo! officially rejected the offer saying the offer undervalues the company’s market value. Now, Microsoft will try to convince the council to replace Yahoo’s board positions for people who approve the sale.
