How to Keep Your Computer Running Efficiently

Face it: you probably rely on your computer a lot more than you’d like to admit. For many, just the thought of a computer crash is enough to send them into a panic attack. Because computers are so important in this day and age, it is important that we take proper care of them so that they can take proper care of us. There are a number of things you should be doing – on a regular basis – to ensure your computer’s optimal health. Here are some tips for how to keep your computer running efficiently:

Protection. Always, always, always protect your computer with an anti-virus program. Make sure your program of choice also protects your computer against spyware, adware, and other malicious threats. It is actually possible for your computer to carry a virus without you even knowing it, and that insidious virus can drastically slow down your computer, as well as cause it to freeze-up and restart unexpectedly. Therefore, virus protection is a must to keep your computer operating smoothly.

Updates. You know those pesky little screens that pop up, asking if you’re ready to update your software? You know how you usually put off those updates (because it’s such a hassle to have to restart your computer)? Well, it is a big mistake not to update – on time, every time. There are teams of people out there in the virtual world, working day and night to fix program glitches, enhance your operating system, and make any changes necessary to keeping all of the parts that make the whole of your computer work together smoothly. Updates are the only way to take advantage of all that hard work.

Storage. There are few things that can slow your computer down more than a lack of memory. If you store a lot of music and/or video files, then chances are you could free up a lot of your computer’s memory – and thereby help your computer to run more efficiently – by storing some of those files elsewhere. Explore storage options like external hard drives, disks, flash drives, and cloud storage services to find what’s best for your needs.

Clean it up. Sure, taking a duster to the keyboard every once in a while is a great idea, but you also need to keep your operating system cleaned up. That means clearing your desktop of unnecessary shortcuts, running a registry cleaner regularly, and clearing your computer’s cache of things like cookies, temporary files, and browser history.

As you can see, caring for your computer is not rocket science. It’s actually quite simple and (gasp!), for the most part, inexpensive to do. Follow these tips and keep your computer in tip-top shape.
