American International Group – History

AIG was founded in 1919 by Cornelius Vander Starr in Shanghai. It soon spread throughout Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. On the death of its founder and until 2005 was headed by Maurice R. Greenberg (who resigned to inflate AIG’s accounts), replaced by Martin J. Sullivan.

* In 2004 an investigation revealed that the accounting fraud had been inflated. Following an agreement with the attorney general of the State of New York, AIG will pay 1.6 billion dollars.
